Purpose and Activities

The foundation promotes the appreciation of the art and craft of film music through education, filmed interviews, scholarly research and writing, and film scoring workshops for students.


Established in 2001 in CA - Founded by the late Elmer Bernstein and Herschel Burke Gilbert. Mr. Bernstein wrote the theme songs and music for more than 200 films and television shows, including "On the Waterfront," "The Magnificent Seven," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Airplane!," "Ghostbusters," "The Age of Innocence," and "Far from Heaven." He also won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work for the 1967 film "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Mr. Gilbert composed music for such films and television shows as "The Jackie Robinson Story," "Carmen Jones," and "Comanche"
