Mitchell, a nature enthusiast, built Woodlands residential community in 1974 and sold it in 1997. He formerly owned Bald Head Island in North Carolina as well as hotels in Galveston. He and his wife Cynthia have played a major role in the revitalization of his hometown of Galveston.
