Purpose and Activities

The El-Hibri Foundation is a philanthropic organization that empowers and equips Muslim leaders and their allies to build thriving, inclusive communities. EHF makes grants and implements innovative programs to provide resources and skills, forge collaborative relationships, and increase inclusion of and within American Muslim communities. EHF was started by philanthropists Ibrahim and Elisabeth El-Hibri and their family in 2001 as a way to continue their long commitment to fostering a more inclusive, equitable world. The El-Hibri Foundation works to achieve the following: • EHF advances inclusion of and within American Muslim communities by investing financial, physical and relational resources in individuals and organizations who share our vision of a world in which all individuals, regardless of race, religion, theology, political party or gender, have an opportunity to thrive. • EHF empowers leaders through innovative programs that ensure current and future leaders have skills and tools necessary to successfully launch and manage their organizations. • EHF builds communities by bringing people of diverse backgrounds – both Muslims and not – to the table to forge new partnerships and by investing in individuals and organizations that share our belief that stronger communities are built with cooperation and collaboration. In 2017, the foundation identified 3 focus areas for their grantmaking: 1) Advancing Inclusion: Implementing initiatives and programs to advance inclusion of American Muslim communities and promote inclusive societal norms; 2) Building Capacity: Equipping leaders and organizations with the training, skills, and approaches needed to maximize their organizational impact and reach high performance; and 3) Organizing Communities: Catalyzing collaboration and collective action, and building coalitions and inclusive partnerships that strengthen civil society. In addition to its grantmaking, the foundation offers three Peace Awards annually to recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in advancing inclusion, building capacity, and organizing communities for positive social change. The El-Hibri Foundation also offers training programs for mission-aligned nonprofit organizations in key leadership skills and effective management strategies, and hosts annual events to celebrate leaders that advance inclusion and promote dignity and equal respect for all people. .

Established in 2001 in DC - Giving back to the community and the fundamental belief in charity continues to be an essential and integral part of the El-Hibri family tradition. Proud of the legacy of charitable works by his family, in 2007, the late Mr. Ibrahim El-Hibri, made a substantial gift to the foundation to ensure that its beneficial work continues. Today, under the direction of his son, Fuad El-Hibri, the foundation seeks to help the less fortunate, bring about lasting change in interfaith understanding and global peace, and improve our world. It is in the tribute of Ibrahim El-Hibri’s memory and the great work he did that the headquarters building has been named in his honor
