Founded by Ann and Will Eisner. The late Will Eisner was an influential comics writer and artist, and was known as one of the most important contributors to the development of the medium. His signature creation was the comic character "The Spirit." He received many awards from the National Cartoonist Society including their highest tribute, the Reuben Award. Eisner was inducted into the Academy of Comic Book Arts Hall of Fame in 1971 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1988, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were created in his honor
