Purpose and Activities

The fund's primary interest is in the piloting or expansion of new, innovative programs of organizations operating in New York, NY, and its more urbanized surrounding areas in northeastern NJ (Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties). The fund has a particular interest in programs serving young people. Funding interests include 1) Education, especially programs that serve public school children from disadvantaged backgrounds, 2) Social welfare, especially programs addressing issues including child abuse, parent education, juvenile delinquency, teenage pregnancy, housing and homelessness, youth employment and job training, and 3) Health care, particularly for institutions and programs that serve economically and socially disadvantaged people.

Established in 1982 in NY - The fund's assets are derived from the estates of the late Mr. Edwin L. Cummings and his wife, Frances L. Cummings, who died in 1978. Until 1958, Mr. and Mrs. Cummings had maintained a financially conservative lifestyle. At that time, they received a large block of IBM stock from a wealthy aunt. The value of their stock became so great that they decided in their later years to distribute the bulk of their estate for charitable purposes. Charles T. Lark, Jr., a friend of the founder, and the Irving Trust Company (now BNY Mellon, N.A.) were appointed trustees of the fund. Upon Mr. Lark's death in 1983, J. Andrew Lark, Esq. succeeded him as per instructions in Mr. Cummings' will. Mr. Lark and BNY Mellon, N.A. continue to this date as the trustees
