Purpose and Activities

Giving primarily to encourage and improve public knowledge and appreciation for contemporary American music. The fund has established the Performing Ensembles Program, which awards grants to performing ensembles with a commitment to contemporary American music, and the Recording Program to support recordings, as well as a Supplemental Program for service organizations and others.


Established in 1991 in NY; funded in 1992 - Founded by the late Aaron Copland, who was a composer of concert and film music, as well as an accomplished pianist. He was also instrumental in forging a distinctly American style of composition and was widely known as "the dean of American composers." Copland was awarded the New York Music Critics’ Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize in composition for "Appalachian Spring."
