Purpose and Activities

The foundation works to catalyze new, evidence-based policies and practices that will lead to improved health outcomes; strengthen the development of professional programs that produce competent graduates to meet the demands of the health sector; reduce disparities in access to health services between rural and urban populations; develop innovative approaches to major public health challenges, such as tobacco control; and expand channels that enable health professionals in China and Asia to more deeply engage in global health exchange and development. Southeast Asia remains a focus of the grantmaker's work and grants to institutions in that region reflect the same integrated themes of health policy systems and sciences, medical education, and rural health.

Incorporated in 1928 in NY - The China Medical Board of New York, Inc. was organized in 1914 as a division of the Rockefeller Foundation and incorporated as an independent body in 1928. The majority of its funds were devoted to the support of Peking Union Medical College until the college was nationalized in 1951. Since that time, the board has conducted more diverse programs now involving eight countries and territories in East and Southeast Asia, including the People's Republic of China.
