Purpose and Activities

The fund seeks to expand educational opportunities available to low-income families by working with communities nationwide to provide tuition assistance to help low-income children gain access to elementary and secondary schools of their choice.


Established in 1998 in NY - Founded by the late John T. Walton and Theodore J. Forstmann. Mr. Walton was the son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, and was the chairman of venture capital firm True North Partners until his accidental death in 2005. Mr. Forstmann was one of the founders of the private equity firm Forstmann Little & Company, and chairman and C.E.O. of talent agency IMG. The late Theodore J. Forstmann committed to The Giving Pledge, and pledged to give away at least half of his wealth to philanthropy.
