Purpose and Activities

Giving primarily for medical research into the causes, origins and treatment of cancer. Grants to institutions only for support of cancer research fellowships.


Established in 1937 in CT - A gift in trust to Yale University, the fund is dedicated to the memory of Jane Coffin Childs, who was Mr. Childs' wife and Miss Coffin's sister. Jane Coffin Childs and Alice S. Coffin were the daughters of Charles Coffin, first president of the General Electric Company. Several members of the Childs family serve on the fund's board of managers. The board of managers, with the advice of the board of scientific advisers, determines how and for what purposes the income and principal of the fund will be expended. The board of scientific advisers is comprised of doctors and scientists in the biomedical field who are affiliated with large universities and centers for medical research
