Established in 1981 in DC as a public charity; re-classified as an independent foundation in 1999 - Founded in the name of the late Harry Chapin, a singer and songwriter known for songs such as "Taxi," "Cat's in the Cradle," and "W*O*L*D." He was killed in a car crash on Long Island in 1981; in 1987, he was posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal.
