Purpose and Activities

Provides funding for college scholarship assistance to young South Carolina residents who have lost one or both parents; also provides counseling and hosts a yearly retreat for grantees. Scholarship assistance to 4-year institutions for high school seniors and college freshmen and sophomores only.

Established in 1947 in SC - Founded by the late James F. Byrnes, a politician from the state of South Carolina who served in all three branches of the federal government in addition to serving at the state level. From 1911-1925 Mr. Byrnes served as a member of the House of Representatives; from 1931–1941 he served as a United States Senator; from 1941-1942 he served as a Justice on the Supreme Court; from 1945-1947 he served as Secretary of State and from 1951-1955 he served as Governor of South Carolina.
