Established in 1997 in NY as a private foundation; status changed to a public charity in 2002 - Founded in the name of the late John Butler, a classical and modern choreographer. During his career, Butler collaborated with the composers Gian Carlo Menotti and Alban Berg, artist Andy Warhol, and writer Ezra Pound. He wrote ballets for Mikhail Baryshnikov, Natalia Makarova, and Judith Jamison
