Purpose and Activities

The institute works to increase the impact of women on all aspects of technology, and to increase the positive impact of technology on the world's women.


Established in 1997 in CA as the Institute for Women and Technology; changed to current name in 2003 - Founded by computer scientist Anita Borg. Ms. Borg was one of the first female computer scientists to earn her Ph.D., and was instrumental in developing novel methods of computer information systems. In 1999, she was appointed to the Presidential Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering, and Technology; she was also awarded a Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment in 2002
