Established in 1959 in AL by resolution and declaration of trust; corporate side established in 1997 - The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham was created by community leaders in 1959 as a savings account for the community and today serves the greater Birmingham area, including Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties. Grants and initiatives focus on strategies to achieve the results the community wants for itself. Dedicated to driving positive change, the foundation continues to innovate with the creation of Community Catalyst Funds as a new resource for transformational investments. The foundation consistently ranks in the top 100 among some 700 community foundations nationwide, based on assets (the size of endowments), grants made (the amount of dollars put back into the community each year) and gifts received (contributions to the foundation from donors). The grantmaker is a signatory to Philanthropy’s Promise, an initiative of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP). By signing on, the grantmaker has committed to allocating the majority of its grantmaking dollars to marginalized communities and at least 25 percent to social justice strategies, such as advocacy, community organizing, and civic engagement
