Incorporated in 1975 in HI as successor to Juliette M. Atherton Trust established in 1915; F. C. Atherton Trust merged into the foundation in 1976 - The original trust bore the name of its benefactor, the late Juliette M. Atherton (widow of J.B. Atherton), who entrusted the philanthropy to the direction of three of her children as a means of continuing the charitable works in which she was engaged during her lifetime. The daughter of pioneer American missionaries, Mrs. Atherton was particularly concerned with Protestant religious, charitable, and educational agencies. The late Frank C. Atherton, son of the founder and one of the original trustees, established the F.C. Atherton Trust in 1935 to continue his support of charitable programs in Hawaii.
