Purpose and Activities

A private operating foundation organized to advance knowledge and understanding of conservation; to preserve the beauty of the landscape and the natural and living resources in areas of the U.S. and elsewhere; and to educate the public in the proper use of such areas.


Incorporated in 1958 in NY - Founded by the Laurance S. Rockefeller, and Laurance S. "Larry" Rockefeller, Jr. Laurance S. Rockefeller was a venture capitalist and financier of aviation companies. Mr. Rockefeller's philanthropic interests included those long supported by the Rockefeller family, but he was best known as an ardent conservationist, serving on numerous commissions and advising every president since Dwight D. Eisenhower on issues involving recreation, wilderness preservation and ecology until his death in 2004.
