Purpose and Activities

The vision and mission of the foundation is to discover, develop and expand environments of limitless learning for all Idahoans.

Established in 1966 in ID - Founded by Joe and Kathryn Albertson. Mr. Albertson was the founder of the Albertsons chain of grocery store. From its beginning, the foundation gave to a variety of charitable causes within Idaho, where the couple met, married and raised their daughter, Barbara. As the foundation's assets grew, its giving began to focus primarily on one area -- Idaho education. Joe Albertson passed away in 1993. In 1997, Kathryn gave a generous gift of $660 million worth of Albertson's Incorporated stock to the foundation, which propelled its giving level from approximately $2.5 million a year to more than $35 million. Kathryn was a Director Emeritus on the foundation's Board of Directors until her passing in April, 2002.
