The Library’s mission is not to erect a monument to me, but to collect, publish and comment on archival records, books and documents related to me, and to interpret with their help and through the medium of my life story and my public activities the social processes in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century.
The Vaclav Havel Library should be entirely independent of state support, and its programs should include research based on collected archival documents, publishing activities, exhibitions, and conferences.
It should of course reach out to non-governmental organizations, cooperate with domestic and international institutions and universities, and be concerned with the state of human rights in the world.
It should be a focal point for critical reflection of the state of society, a crossroad of information and opinion, and a venue for discussion and debate.
