Purpose and Activities

The purpose of the fund is to promote more in-depth investigative coverage of issues, especially relating to children, mental health, refugees and migrants. The fund creates opportunities for journalists to carry out detailed investigations into certain aspects of Irish society and to expose injustices that might exist.

Founded in the name of Mary Raferty, and Irish investigative journalist who uncovered abuses, particularly toward children. She is the author of the book "Suffer the Little Children," and was producer of the documentary series "States of Fear" which focused on the abuse of children in Ireland's child care system between the 1930s and the 1970s. Raferty also produced the TV special "Cardinal Secrets" which focused on child abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese.
