Purpose and Activities

The bureau aims to inform and enhance public and private decision making on economic and policy issues related to agriculture, food, the environment, and rural development.


Originally established in 1961, ERS' predecessor agency, USDA's Bureau of Agricultural Economics (BAE), was set up in 1922, organizing the department's economic research into one agency and expanding the role of economics in understanding the U.S. food and agriculture system
