Grantmaker Record Display Screen — Standard View

The Grantmaker Record Display Screen in Standard View displays the record of the selected grantmaker as a series of "tabs." Each record includes a Profile Tab and up to eight additional tabs depending on the grantmaker selected and your subscription plan. Click on a tab to access that part of the record. Descriptions of the content and/or functionality of each tab are provided below:

Profile Tab

The content of the Profile Tab varies based on the size and nature of the grantmaker and the availability of information. The Profile Tab contains an At A Glance section displaying basic information about the grantmaker and individual sections for other information. Use the Jump To links on the left side of the screen at the top of the Profile and the Top of Page links at the top of each individual section to navigate within the Profile Tab. The date on which Foundation Center editorial staff last updated the Profile appears on the right side of the screen at the top of the Profile Tab. A link on the left side of the screen at the top of the Profile Tab can be used to change the Grantmaker Record Display Screen format from Standard View to Compact View. A link at the bottom of the Profile Tab can be used to e-mail the Foundation Center's editorial staff with updated information on the grantmaker.

The At A Glance section of the Profile Tab might contain any of the following:

Grantmaker Name: The full legal name of the grantmaker and the "Doing Business As," "Also Known As," and/or former name of the grantmaker, if applicable.

Grantmaker Address: The street address, city, state, and ZIP code of the grantmaker's principal office.

Telephone: The telephone number of the grantmaker.

Contact: The name and title of the contact person.

Fax: The fax number of the grantmaker.

E-mail: The e-mail address of the contact person or the general e-mail address of the grantmaker.

URL: The URL address of the grantmaker.

Type of Grantmaker: Classifications include community foundation, company-sponsored foundation, independent foundation, and operating foundation for all subscribers as well as corporate giving program and public charity for Platinum and Professional subscribers. Type of Grantmaker definitions are included in the About Foundation Directory Online section.

IRS Exemption Status: The Internal Revenue Code (IRC) section under which the grantmaker is exempt from federal income tax.

Additional Descriptor: Any other supplemental classifications of the grantmaker further describing its organizational structure, such as family foundation, giving circle, or supporting organization.

Financial Data: Includes the year-end date of the accounting period for which financial data is supplied and the total dollar value of the grantmaker's investments at the end of the accounting period and the total dollar value of all grants and contributions awarded by the grantmaker during the accounting period. Expanded financial information can be found in the individual Financial Data section of the Profile Tab.

EIN: The Employer Identification Number (EIN) of the grantmaker, as assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

990 or 990-PF: Links to the latest available IRS Form 990-PF filings by private foundations for all subscribers as well as IRS Form 990 filings by public charities for Platinum and Professional subscribers. Accessing our IRS filings requires the use of the most recent version of the free Adobe Reader. Download the latest version of the Reader.

An E-Grant Reporter icon appears at the top of the At A Glance section to indicate that a grantmaker submits electronic grant lists to the Foundation Center on a regular basis.

In addition to the At A Glance section, the Profile Tab might contain any of the following individual sections of information:

Additional Contact Information: Any additional addresses (such as a separate application address) supplied by the grantmaker for correspondence or application submission. Additional telephone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, and URL addresses might also be listed here.

Online Communications: Links to sites and pages where a grantmaker maintains an online presence or communicates information about its activities.

Donor(s): A historical record of the name(s) of the donor(s) or principal contributor(s) to the grantmaker, including individuals and corporations. If a donor is deceased, the ‡ symbol follows the name.

Economic Crisis Information: Information regarding how the current economic crisis is affecting the grantmaker. This data has been compiled from the public announcements made by grantmakers about how they plan to respond to the recession.

Background: Establishment data, including the legal form (usually a trust or corporation) of establishment of the grantmaker and the year and state in which the grantmaker was established, and other background information.

Limitations: Any stated limitations on the grantmaker's giving. Included here are geographic preferences and restrictions by type of recipient and type of support. It is also noted here if a grantmaker does not accept unsolicited applications.

Purpose and Activities: The purpose and activities, in general terms, of the grantmaker. This statement might reflect specific funding interests or a general philosophy as expressed by the grantmaker or, if no grantmaker statement is available, an analysis of the actual grants awarded by the grantmaker. Many grantmakers leave statements of purpose intentionally broad, indicating only the major program areas within which they fund. More specific areas of interest can often be found in the individual Fields of Interest section of the Profile Tab.

Program Area(s): Program areas are distinctly identified areas of interest that the grantmaker supports on a continuing basis or specifically named initiatives created by the grantmaker. Detailed descriptions of grantmaker program areas are provided for Platinum and Professional subscribers.

Fields of Interest: The specific fields of interest reflected by the grantmaker's giving, broken down into three categories: Subjects, International Interests, and Population Groups. The terminology used in this section is based on the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE), originally developed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics. To learn more about the national taxonomy and the Foundation Center's use of it, visit our web site.

Geographic Focus: The geographic giving preferences of the grantmaker, usually one or more states. "National," "International," and "National; international" are used to identify grantmakers that give on a national basis, an international basis, and a national and international basis, respectively. Grantmakers that identify their giving in this way should not be confused with those that support "national organizations" and/or "international organizations," which describes the type of organization supported rather than the geographic scope of the grantmaker.

Types of Support: The types of funding (such as endowments, seed money, building/renovation, fellowships, etc.) offered by the grantmaker. See the Types of Support definitions list for a short description of each one.

Publications: Printed materials available from the grantmaker that describe its activities. These can include annual reports, informational brochures, and application guidelines.

Application Information: Includes any of the following: the required form of application, the preferred initial approach, the number of copies of proposals requested, frequency and dates of board or committee meetings, application deadlines, the general amount of time the grantmaker requires to notify applicants of its decision, languages in which applications are accepted, and other general application information. For Platinum and Professional subscribers, a list of materials that should accompany proposals might also be included. Note: Some grantmakers have indicated that applications are not accepted or that funds are currently committed to ongoing projects. Applicants should be aware that the chance of receiving support from these grantmakers is extremely small.

Governing Bodies: The names, titles, and affiliations of officers, directors, trustees, administrators, committee members, and members of other governing bodies of the grantmaker. An asterisk following an individual's name indicates an officer who is also a director or trustee.

Number of Staff: The number of professional and support staff employed by the grantmaker and an indication of part-time or full-time status. The number of shared staff and the organization(s) with which staff is shared might also be noted here.

Memberships: Membership organizations with which the grantmaker is affiliated, broken down into three groups: Regional Associations of Grantmakers (RAGs), Affinity Groups, and Associations and Other Philanthropic Organizations.

Financial Data: Includes the year-end date of the accounting period for which financial data is supplied and any of the following: Revenue, Assets, Asset Type, Gifts Received, Expenditures, Total Giving, Program Services Expenses, Qualifying Distributions, Grants, Grants to Individuals, Employee Matching Gifts, Grantmaker-Administered Programs, In-Kind Gifts, Loans/Program-Related Investments, Loans to Individuals, and Set-Asides. See the Types of Financial Data definitions list for a short description of each one.

The financial data on some profiles may be marked as unaudited. This means the financial data is taken from a trusted unaudited source if an audited tax return is not yet available. These sources can include the grantmaker's annual report or a communication directly from the grantmaker. If financial data for a particular year is updated when the tax return becomes available, the data may change slightly, but there usually are not major differences.

Additional Location Information: The county, metropolitan area, if applicable, and congressional district in which the grantmaker's principal office is located.

Selected Grants: A representative sample of up to ten grants paid to organizations for those foundations with total giving of at least $100,000. For Platinum and Professional subscribers, selected grants for corporate giving programs and public charities are listed when available. For a more comprehensive list of a foundation's grants, Plus, Premium, Platinum, and Professional subscribers should use the Search Grants Screen. Professional subscribers can also access the Grantmaker-Specific Search Grants Screen directly from the grantmaker record. See the description of the functionality of the Search Grants Tab below for more information.
