Scenario 5 — Application information for Chicago-area foundations

Question: I've been asked to request the levels of application information detail Chicago-area foundations make available to potential grantees. How do I find those that provide formal guidelines so I can request a copy for my analysis?

Answer: Nailing down your search to a geographical location like a city or state is always a good way to get a manageable list of results. Here we're searching for foundations located in Chicago that provide application guidelines.

Tip: In this section of the tutorial you are instructed to type search words into the Index Search fields, but it's suggested you use the indexes instead if you're not yet well acquainted with common terms used in The Foundation Directory Online.

Follow these steps:

    1. Type Chicago into the Foundation City field.
    2. Type Application Guidelines into the Text Search field.
    3. Click Search. The Results List appears displaying a list of all foundations with your search terms.
    4. Click a foundation name on the Results List to view it in the Record Display window.
    5. Click Close Window when you are through viewing the record, and click on another foundation name in the results list or click New Search to go back to the Search Screen and start over.
