Foundation Directory Online Professional

1. What content and functionality is available with Foundation Directory Online Professional?

Foundation Directory Online Professional provides subscribers with access to an unprecedented wealth of timely, comprehensive information on grantmakers and their grants. Included is a database of the entire universe of over 98,000 foundations, corporate giving programs, and grantmaking public charities in the U.S.; a database of nearly 3,500 sponsoring companies, offering a quick pathway to corporate funders; a database of over 1.8 million recently awarded grants; and a keyword-searchable database of over 584,000 recently filed IRS Forms 990 and 990-PF.

Unique funder portfolios organize additional funder-specific content in one convenient location and include: grantmaker-related news, job opportunities, and Request For Proposals (RFPs); grantmaker-sponsored publications; and officer and trustee affiliations.

Foundation Directory Online Professional also provides exclusive funder-specific functionality: the ability to search across a funder's grants with customized search indexes; the ability to map a funder's grants for any given year by recipient type or primary subject and drill down to view disbursements by county, city, ZIP code, or congressional district; the ability to chart a funder's grants for any given year by recipient type or primary subject and drill down to view disbursements by secondary and tertiary category; and the ability to sign up to receive funder-specific e-mail alerts.

2. Why do some grantmaker records have more tabs at the top than others?

The number of tabs at the top of a grantmaker record is determined by the amount of content available for a particular grantmaker and other factors. Generally speaking, larger grantmakers will have more tabs than smaller grantmakers, as the former tend to make grant information more readily available or otherwise meet our criteria for grant indexing, are covered more often in the news, and are more likely to publish annual reports and other publications.

3. How does the Grantmaker-Specific Search Grants Screen differ from the main Search Grants Screen?

The Grantmaker-Specific Search Grants Screen is used to search for records of recently awarded grants specific to a particular grantmaker while the main Search Grants Screen is used to search for records of recently awarded grants across our entire database. Indexes included on the Grantmaker-Specific Search Grants Screen contain fewer entries than the indexes on the main Search Grants Screen because these indexes are specific to the grantmaker whose grants you are searching.

4. How far back do the news stories go, and where do they come from?

The news stories in Foundation Directory Online Professional come from Philanthropy News Digest (PND), the Foundation Center's daily online news service. Stories go back as far as 2001.
